Mr. Deery grew up in rural Australia helping his family run a sheep and cattle farm. He attended elementary and secondary school in the small town of Bairnsdale, Victoria. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Writing at Queensland University and a Graduate Diploma in Elementary Education at Monash University.
Mr. Deery first came to Montessori education through an article on the philosophy of education and was intrigued. He consumed all the material he could find on Montessori and observed in a primary and an elementary classroom where he witnessed curiosity, intelligence, and benevolence that he hadn’t seen before in children. He began his Montessori teaching career in 2013 as an assistant. He worked in primary, lower elementary, and upper elementary classrooms for 18 months before taking his elementary training in San Diego, California. He then taught for two years in San Diego before moving to FCMS.
Mr. Deery first heard about FCMS from Ms. Hannon (a former FCMS teacher) and Ms. Schiller at a summer conference in British Columbia, Canada. He was impressed by the schools’s dedication to authentic Montessori and the experience of the staff. Mr. Deery loves working at FCMS and is very grateful to the teachers, children, parents, and greater community that make it such a wonderful place.
Mr. Deery has many interests and so really cherishes his free time. He loves being active and enjoys hiking, surfing, and weight training. To relax, he enjoys reading literature, watching good movies and television, cooking, meditating, and learning practical philosophy.
